I always thought of Barbara as lacea€"delicate, understated, yes, but also tough, strong, enduring. I loved her. In fact, it's Barbara who first interviewed me in 1990 when I'd just finished up a Master's degree and who invited me to join the University of Houston-Downtown English Department as an adjunct faculty member. I admired her interviewing style: so kind, generous, genuinely interested in what I had to say. She made mea€"one who'd always been so very shya€"comfortable enough to want to speak, to be able to. That first kindness proved to be exactly who she was, in all situations, always. She was a woman of grace. I will always be grateful for her presence in my life. My heartfelt condolences to each of youa€"her beloved husband, children, and grandchildren who must be so deeply bereft. Take good care.

Barbara was also known for her wonderful weaving abilities. Back in the mid-1970's, after a few lessons on the frame loom with Phyllis Tucker, Phyllis refused to teach me and said I must call Barbara Bartholomew for private floor loom weaving lessons. She was very accommodating working between her university teaching and my living out on FM 1960 near I-45 and my travels. After about 4-5 sessions Barbara contacted Margaret Sheppard and said "what do I do with her? She has gone through my lessons." Margaret said "Give her this overshot draft, my yarn for 20/2 warp, and if she can accomplish this she will be able to do what ever she wants in weaving". She was a fantastic instructor, patient, and willing to go in to depths to answer my many questions. She was my beginning. And today I am still weaving what ever I want to tackle. Read all you can about a technique, learn the rules, and then go for it, knowingly breaking rules if you decide you can. Barbara gave me a wonderful insight into to weaving and was a great person. Thank you Barbara. Then many years later when I was at a CHT Convention in San Antonio, she came in and looked me up. My this time we had left Houston, left Hobbs, NM, left Tulsa, OK and where living 7 months in Mosier, OR and 5 months in Creede, CO. We had a wonderful reunion. I will greatly miss and still long remember Barbara for the rest of my life. I send the family my deepest sympathies and do hope that your memories of your mother can bring you as much joy as mine do. I hope it helps to know that others still think of her and think of her long after their lives separated. God be with you, Dottie Smith

Barbara was a loving, gentle soul who served as leader and surrogate mother to a bunch of college students in the mid 1970s. Even now, 41 years after I last saw her or spoke with her, I think of her and those times fairly often, and always with deep affection. My heartfelt sympathies and warmest thoughts to Bart, Andi, and Jess. I wish I could be there to help celebrate her life.
