Helen Frances “Fran” Spencer was born in Houston on March 5, 1927 to Bluford and Lena Belle Hare and passed

away on April 25, 2017.  She grew up in The Houston Heights where she graduated from Reagan High School.

After high school Fran attended Abilene Christian College in Abilene.  Len Spencer, who was from Ovalo, Texas was

also a student at ACC at the time and his roommate was J.B. Hare, Fran’s brother.  During spring-break of 1943 J.B

invited Len to Houston with him.  There Len met his future wife, Frances Hare, and they were married in August 1946. 

They were married for 64 years.  Len was 85 years of age  at the time of his passing in July, 2010.  Len was the last of

the World War ll veterans in the Bellaire church of Christ, having served in the Army in the Medical Corp as a medic 

from 1943 to 1946, part of that time in Europe.    For many years they were faithful members of the Bellaire church.  

They went to Hawaii in 1947 to do mission work with the church there.  While there Len completed his college degree

at the University of Hawaii.   They returned to Abilene in 1949 and Len went back to ACC and took additional Bible

courses for one year.  They lived in Abilene and Hobbs, N.M. from 1950 to 1955 where Len worked for the J.C. Penney Company.  In 1955 they moved to Houston where Len worked in Fran's father's lumber business in the Heights.  In

1959 Len and Fran started a very successful lawn maintenance company, The Spencer Company.  In 1972 daughter

Karen and son Gregory started an interior plant leasing and maintenance division of the company.  Fran was the

office manager and accountant during the earlier years of their business.  In 1982 Len and Fran retired and sold

the business to son Gregory.  To this day you can still see trucks from “The Spencer Company” on the streets

of Houston.

After that Fran and Len went on to start a business brokerage business and later retired……”and lived happily ever after!” 

Truly, they are wonderful examples of living, working, and dying happily in their faith.  Fran was for all of her life a kind, generous and loving daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, friend,  and faithful Christian.
