Coach Mike, Im absolutely gutted to hear this horrible news. It's been years since we've spoke or seen each other. Last time I saw you, I was about 14 years old. I don't know if you remember me, but I surely do remember you, and all the great times at your soccer camp. I started going when I was 8-9 years old to the summer camps, the moment I introduced myself as "Branson", you immediately told me my new name would be pickle, after the brand of pickles back home for you. You taught me how to be confident on the ball, and how to properly put my foot through the ball. Skills to this day I still use on the pitch. I graduated from University of Houston with a finance degree, and now I'm living in Spain where I am currently studying in Madrid, for a masters degree in business. I know you'd be proud of me and the man I've become. My deepest condolences to your family, and all the friends in your life. You will be forever remembered as a legend in my eyes.

-Pickle

I would like to express my deepest sorrow for the lost of your dear loved one. At times many look to Gods word for comfort. Pleas take your Bible and look at what God promises for the future with regards to our dead loved ones. (John 5: 28 & 29, Acts 24:15) Yes, God really will defeat our enemy death forever. This will enable us to one day have the hope of seeing our dead loved ones again. I hope this message will be a source of comfort to you. If you have any questions feel free to contact one of Jehovah's Witnesses or log on to our website at JW.org.

Sincerely,
JW

I first was introduced to Mike in the early '90's as he became the professional trainer for my son's, Katy/Bear Creek soccer team. I watched along with the parents of the other boys as Mike taught and inspired these young men (ages 14, 15). His love of the game and affection for the boys we all so appreciated. As Brett, my son, was graduating from high school in 1997 Mike wrote an outstanding letter of recommendation for Brett to use in his applications for college. These are the things a parent so appreciates and never forgets. Some ten years later I became reacquainted with Mike at the gym and he was still inspiring young men. Soccer was his medium, but his life lessons of positive attitude, confidence, and believe in ones gifts extended well beyond the "pitch". What a wonderful legacy....to have touched and inspired hundreds of young men's lives. A grateful parent!

I have only seen Mike maybe a dozen times in the past 25 years and most of those were within a few years of graduating. Despite this, he still occupies such a strong section of my memories and psyche. He was one of a kind! I feel lucky to have started my journey to adulthood in his presence and under his tutelage. He will be sorely missed but will surely live on in the countless others who had the joy of knowing him.
Message from Brian Sasser, John Latchett and the Bullets Soccer team

Houston's soccer community lost a legend with the passing of Mike Henshaw. John Latchett and I also lost a great mentor and friend.

When we coached our boys in U7 at Meyerland Soccer, we didn't know anything about running soccer drills. Dribble here, pass there, take a shot. Then, Mike came to do a professional training for the team. It was the Change Direction of Play drill - CDP. The kids loved the drill and immediately started using the skill in practice and the game. But what I really remember is how Mike made the competitive drill seem like a fun game, not training. "If you don't cheer your teammates when you finish, you won't get the point!" Mike said.

From that moment forward we knew one thing -- Mike was going to be a part of our team.

Carter and his friends went to many of Mike's soccer camps at the Evelyn Rubenstein Jewish Community Center of Houston and Rice University. While the boys loved the soccer part, they always talked about Mike's life and his love of soccer. They learned so much during the classroom part of camp -- about Arsenal, the Rice University LADS Soccer and those great soccer songs. They were also learning about character and didn't even know it.

At practice and camp, Mike would always ask the boys if they had "Zah-zhurr'." It's the "it" inside you to take the shot, ace the test, and do everything with confidence. "Do you have it, Carter? What about you, Quinten?"

That's why we loved Mike Henshaw.

When we created an independent team and moved to a competitive league the next year, we followed Mike. Pretty soon, he was our official "trainer" and lead practices two nights a week and came to many of our games. He was more than part of our team. Mike held it all together.

When we moved to U13 with more players and a larger field, we had to decide how to move our independent team forward. John and I met Mike at Little Woodrows and talked it over with a beer. Mike had a plan about the team, new players, what fields we could use, and everything else. When we walked out, I told John, "Thank God we have Mike."

That summarizes Mike Henshaw for us:
Thank God the boys had Mike.
Thank God the parents had Mike.
Thank God we had a friend like Mike Henshaw.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Diane, his brother Gerry, nephew Thom Henshaw and his entire family.

Rest in peace, dear friend.
