Carrie Simonton Bailey and Dan Flournoy Bailey must have been delighted the day of Monette’s birth. She was the baby of the family; in fact, her family called her “Baby”. She was a joy to everyone she met. She lived a sweet, blessed, and full life until her peaceful death at age 94.

Monette’s siblings, Jane (Anna Louise) Matthews; Billy (Charles Daniel) Bailey; Jimmy (James) Bailey; and her honorary sister, Gloria Shacklett Alexander, loved and protected her like the Baby she was. As Monette became a young adult, many began calling her “Pinky” because of her lovely auburn hair. She was a stunner.

Monette attended Lanier Junior High School, Lamar High School, and also attended business school ­– all of which prepared her for her careers at Downtown Chevrolet and White-Westinghouse. But who could prepare her for George Miller.

In their teenage years, Monette and George shared a fine friendship, spending many evenings with family and friends at Houston’s famous Hi-Hat and Plantation clubs, cutting the rug while sipping Coca-Cola. Like George, his and Monette’s friendship and fondness for each other endured World War II. Once George returned home, Monette said she and George looked at each other, and knew at once that they were in love – the romantic icing on the cake of what was to be a lifelong best friendship.

They were married in the chapel at First United Methodist Church in downtown Houston on June 8, 1947. As memory recalls, one Christmas in their later years, George was spotted hugging and smooching Monette at the kitchen sink, a heartwarming sign of their enduring love. They remained married until George’s death in 1993.

A member of Westbury United Methodist Church for decades, Monette demonstrated her strong faith, exemplified her spiritual beliefs, and cheerfully volunteered in the church office for eleven years. With her upbeat attitude, she made, “Good morning, Westbury United Methodist Church, this is Monette speaking, how may I help you?” sound as though it was a song lyric. No wonder Monette always believed that to “Love One Another” was our greatest charge in life.

In Monette’s later years, she benefited immensely from the love and care of Marta Contreras, her life angel of more than 25 years; the kind and devoted staff of Belmont Village West University; and the compassionate expertise of Richard Jackson, MD, and Shannon Mitchell, CMA.

No one will miss Monette more than her two daughters, who survive her, Marilyn Monette Miller and Carol Ann Miller, and Marilyn’s husband, Robert Huntley, whom Monette fondly referred to as “my Bob”. They all, however, take much comfort in knowing Monette now dances in the arms of her beloved George, alongside family and friends from a lifetime and beyond.

And what a beautiful lifetime it was.

A celebration of Monette’s life will be held on Saturday, April 22, 2017 from two o’clock in the afternoon until six in the evening at Bradshaw-Carter Home, 1734 West Alabama Street in Houston.
