Anne Holloman, beloved mother, educator and friend died peacefully on Sunday, October 29, 2023. Anne was born in Columbus, Ohio, daughter of Adah Elizabeth and Harold Kenneth Costlow. They lived in Bremen, Ohio and relocated to Houston, Texas in the mid-1950’s. Anne attended Reagan High School where she was active in the Redcoats and symphonic band. She studied nursing at Texas Woman’s University then transitioned to education at the University of Houston.
Anne married Sydney Cartwright (Corky) Holloman in the chapel of St. Luke’s United Methodist Church in 1964. They established their home in Oak Forest and had two daughters, Karen and Ginger.
Anne was a devoted first and second grade teacher for 32 years, primarily at Katherine Smith Elementary and Stevens Elementary. She enjoyed mentoring new teachers and received the Texas PTA’s Honorary Life Member Award, one of the highest honors recognizing outstanding contributions to the well-being of children.
Anne was involved in many church activities including mission trips to Haiti and The Bahamas, television ministry and Disciple Bible Study. She loved to laugh, the fine arts, reading, Boulder Colorado, games, margaritas, coffee and dogs. Anne was an amazing cook who created many special meals for her family and friends.
After retirement, Anne joined the outreach staff at St. Luke’s UMC where she helped establish the Kids Hope USA mentoring program. She was an avid volunteer with many organizations including Stilwell Retirement Residence, the Family Visitors’ Center at Lucile Plane State Jail, and Christian Community Service Center. She served as President of The Houston Association of Retired Teachers and was honored with the Dr. Kate Bell Memorial “Spirit of HART” Award.
Anne is survived by her daughters, Karen Elizabeth Holloman and Virginia (Ginger) Anne Araujo, son-in-law Armando Araujo and many faithful friends.
A memorial service will be held at 10:30 AM on Thursday, November 16, 2023, in the sanctuary at St. Luke’s United Methodist Church, 3471 Westheimer Road, Houston TX 77027. Immediately following, all are invited to a reception to celebrate Anne with her family.
