Garland (Sandy) Howard Turner

Garland (Sandy) Howard Turner passed away peacefully on December 20, 2018.  Sandy was born March 2, 1955.  She was a “lifer” at the Kinkaid School and attended Southwestern University.  She married Bill Turner in 1975 and set out on an eight year adventure aboard their boat, “Garland.”  They sailed the Chesapeake, Bahamas, and every island in the Caribbean to Venezuela.  Upon returning to Houston, they were blessed with two sons.  Forty years later, Bill and Sandy divorced, yet remained close friends. 

Sandy loved her family and friends mightily.  She met adversity with determination, never quit until the job was done, and danced as if no one was watching.  True to her word, she fought the cancer with dignity, grace, faith, and humor.  Several years ago, Sandy reconnected with a childhood friend, David Taylor.  He became the love of her life for too short of a time.  David loved Sandy so much, that he chose to stand by her from the moment of diagnosis.  Everyone is grateful for his courage, commitment, and care. 

Sandy is preceded in death by her parents, Joyce and Frank Bonner Howard, and her brother, George Bonner Howard.  She is survived by her sons, William Turner, his wife Kathleen, and George Turner, and her loving partner, David Taylor. 

A celebration of Sandy’s life will be held at Bradshaw-Carter, 1734 West Alabama Street in Houston, on January 8, 2019 from five until eight o’clock in the evening.  A memorial service will be held at St. John the Divine on January 9, 2019 at eleven o’clock in the morning.
