Irene Theresa McWeeney

July 17, 2021

Tribute

Irene T. (Cahill) McWeeney passed away on July 17, 2021 at the age of 93. Irene was born in Bronx, New York, to Vincent Cahill of Massachusetts and Mary (McLoughlin) Cahill of County Mayo, Ireland. Irene grew up during the Great Depression, attended part of high school in Wooster, Mass., and graduated from St. Pius Commercial in the Bronx. In 1952, she married William (Bill) Thomas McWeeney and they moved to San Diego, California, where their two daughters were born. In 1958 they moved to Dallas, Texas, where their two sons were born; the family moved to Houston in the mid 1960’s.

Irene spent many years working as a homemaker and the family bookkeeper before eventually working in the electronics and then oil and gas industries. She took early retirement from a management position at Dresser-Atlas in 1983. When her husband retired they traveled to Canada, the Caribbean, Ireland, England, Scotland, and Belgium. Irene was an organizational wizard and a skilled seamstress, making many of her children’s clothes as well as two Franciscan habits.

Irene loved laughing with her family, eating out (especially Italian food), genealogical research into the Cahill and McLoughlin families, becoming tech savvy, and keeping up with her children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews via social media. She was a kind, strong, courageous woman who loved her family and was loved dearly. Irene was preceded in death in February of this year by her husband of 68 years, Bill. She leaves daughter Jean and son-in-law Jeff Hankins, daughter Lynn Johnson and son-in-law Mike and grandson Chris, son Brian and daughter-in-law Carolyn and granddaughter Caitlin, son Neal and daughter-in-law Adriane and granddaughters Grace and Clare, many nieces and nephews, as well as special friend Father Page E. Polk, OFM.
