April 23, 1934 ~ September 14, 2017 (age 83) 83 Years Old

Dr. James Allen Collins passed away at home with his family, as he wished, on September 14, 2017, after six years of contending with Leukemia. Son of James Allen Collins and Grace Kent Collins, he was born April 23, 1934 in Bridgeport, Connecticut.  With his parents and brother, Donald R. Collins, he lived in Virginia and North Carolina and moved to Houston in 1950.  He attended the University of Houston before admission to Baylor University College of Medicine.

Always excelling in studies, after graduation in 1959 Dr. Collins continued in the Baylor program for internship and for specialization in Internal. Medicine.  He was certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine.  His practice in Houston included 25 years in private practice and 17 Years with The Woman's Hospital of Texas.  He retired in 2011.

Dr. Collins is survived by his wife of 58 years, Patricia Lacy Collins , and their four sons: James Allen Collins, John Daniel Collins, Christopher Lacy Collins, and Patrick Andrew Collins as well as by their four grandsons: Alexander Collins, Benjamin Collins, James Collins, and Joseph Collins.

Dr. Collins' devotion to family, medicine, and learning was unremitting . He loved and cared for his extended family and friends throughout his life and, in turn, was greatly loved.  His interests ranged widely: literature, especially Shakespeare, recreational math, birdwatching, sports and nuclear medicine, Spanish, boxing. He had a great life.

A memorial mass will be held Wednesday afternoon, September 20, 2017 at 5:00 p.m. in the Chapel of St. Basil, the University of St. Thomas, 1018 West Alabama Street in Houston.  The Chapel is on the corner of Yoakum and West Alabama.  A reception will follow.

In lieu of usual remembrances, the family requests that contributions be made to The Basilian Fathers of the University of St. Thomas, 3800 Montrose, Houston, Texas 77006, or support be given to the charity of choice.
