Lucila Medina: A Gentle Source of Love
Lucila Medina, 83, of Houston, died Tuesday, May 16, at MD Anderson after a seven-year bout with ovarian cancer.
She was born on February 11, 1934 in Linares, N.L., Mexico to Abraham Gonzalez and Amalia Cepeda. She attended secretarial school. She fell in love with Francisco Medina, married him and moved in the mid-1950s to San Antonio, where they remained briefly before moving to Houston. They lived in Second Ward and raised five children, all of whom went on to receive college degrees.
While her husband worked in the construction business, she stayed home to care for her children and instilled in them a work ethic that eventually led all of them to successful careers. She also taught them the importance of being courteous, kind, respectful, and decent. She will always be remembered as a caring, generous, and loving person, almost saintly in the way she treated others. She was a devout Catholic and her religion was a source of great strength for her.
She is survived by her husband, Francisco Medina; her five children: Francisco "Franc" Medina (Margarita), David Medina (Blanca), Sandra Medina-George (Charles George †), Miriam Medina (Morris Schwartz), Lucy Medina (Horacio Santos) eight grandchildren: Andrea Pihlaskari (Candelario Cervantez), Sara Theriot (Garrett), Daniela Medina, Gabriel Medina, Andres Santos, Victoria Santos, Isabela Medina, and Paco Medina; and one great grandson, Beau Theriot.
She had 11 siblings and more than 100 nephews and nieces.
We thank Dr. Marissa Meyer at MD Anderson for the excellent medical care she provided Lucila.
