Richard Harvey Hanneman

Richard H. (Dick) Hanneman, 87, died April 5, 2019. He was the husband of Sandra K. Goodnough Hanneman; father of Eric of Portland, OR; Mark (Barb) of Reno, NV; Paul (Audrey) of Los Angeles; Michael (deceased); and Joel of Charlotte, NC; grandfather of seven; brother of Robert (Mary Pat) of Ottowa; Janet of Racine, WI; and Carol (deceased).

Born in Racine, Wisconsin, he graduated from Valparaiso University in 1953 and began a career as a news reporter, entered insurance sales, and later was an executive in Missouri, California, Illinois, and Texas before entering management consulting where he enjoyed a 12-year career.

In Houston, Dick was a former board member of Young Audiences and of the Houston Yacht Club, which honored him as an Honorary Past Commodore in 2006. He felt a strong commitment to volunteer work and during his adult lifetime served as a member of the Florissant, MO Library Board; President of DuPage (ILL) Council of Boy Scouts of America; and President of the Child Welfare Institute in Atlanta GA.

As a young adult, he developed an interest in the sport of sailing which he continued to enjoy until age 85 when he could no longer sail his former Olympic-class boat, the Soling. Dick was a past director of the United States Sailing Association, where he served for a time as Secretary and as a member of the Executive Committee. Long a promoter of youth sailing, he was chairman of USSAILING’s Youth Championship Committee, a sailing race officer, and sailing judge.

A reception will be held from 6 – 8 PM May 3, 2019 at Bradshaw-Carter Memorial and Funeral Home, 1734 West Alabama Street, Houston, TX 77098. In lieu of customary remembrances, tax-deductible donations may be made to the Ragnot Amateur Sailing Association (RASA), a youth sailing program at the Houston Yacht Club, 3620 Miramar Drive, Shoreacres, TX 77571.
