LIFE JOURNEY OF ROY LEE PHILLIPS SR.
Mr. Roy Lee Phillips Sr. also affectionately known as “Big Roy”. He was the second son born to the union of Annie Mae Lewis-Phillips and Neppie Phillips. Roy excepted Christ at an early age at Sauny Chapel A. M. E. Church in Chapel Hill. Roy spent his early life navigating and learning about life with his siblings, friends and the community village. He was formally educated in the Chapel and Brenham School System. He later moved to Houston and he graduated from Booker T. Washington High School. While in Houston he met the love of his life Martha Mae Smith of Bryan, Texas. To this union two siblings were born Roy Lee Phillips Jr. and Siquetta Yvonne Phillips.
Roy Lee Phillips Sr. was employed as an Industrial Salesman by Monarch Laundry and Cleaners in Houston, Texas. He was a loyal employee he maintained perfect attendance of 43 years throughout his career until he retired.
In 1977 he joined New Light Baptist Church in Houston, Texas under the leadership of Rev. D.A. Easley (deceased) and remained a member under the leadership of Bishop John Jasper Jr. He was a faithful member and served in the capacity of Superintendent of Sunday School and Chairman of the Deacon Board.
His last official Church was Lilly Grove Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Terry K. Anderson. He was a faithful male chorus member and he loved attending Sunday School. He was a faithful member until his health became an issue where he could not attend church. But continued to stream the services live on Sunday Mornings.
He was preceded in death by his parents Ann Mae Lewis-Turner and Neppie Phillips, wife Martha Mae Phillips.
He leaves to cherish his memories of 84 years with two children, daughter Siquetta Y. Phillips (Henry Hobbs Jr.), son Roy Lee Phillips Jr, (Kimberly). Siblings Clyde Phillips (Sharon), Henry Phillips (Mildred), Freddie Chapel Wright, Florene McCray, Terry Turner all of Houston, Texas. Three grandchildren, Minla Phillips, Courtney Mclean and Corey Mclean, five great grandchildren. One God Daughter- Mrs. Cookie Adams.
Sister-in-laws, Betty Morris of Houston, Texas, Wanda Williams, Theresa Hill, Mary Jefferson, Ester Shirley, Brother -in-law Aubrey Smith Jr. Step Son Rev. John Smith Sr. (Shirley) all from Bryan, Texas
