Susan Deter

June 26, 1946 ~ May 16, 2023 (age 76) 76 Years Old

Tribute

Susan Tipery Deter of Houston died peacefully in her sleep at home with her beloved husband Russell, by her side on May 16, 2023, following a courageous 50+ year battle with Multiple Sclerosis. Beautiful, bright, hilarious, and spiritual, she leaves behind a legacy of endurance, love and kindness. Susan graduated from Tulane University in 1969 with a degree in music and especially loved piano and symphony. She and Russell enjoyed international traveling and being in the east Texas woods. She loved fishing, baseball, plants, and cooking. She received a Master’s degree in psychology from Houston Baptist University in 1991, which she was able to use for helping other people coping with disabilities and in family counseling. She lived a life of faith as a member of St. Anne’s Catholic Church where she served as a Eucharistic minister and always had a word of kindness for priests and parishioners alike.

She will be deeply missed by many, especially the love of her life her husband, Russell Deter, who after nearly 43 years of marriage, cherishes the love she gave so freely. She is preceded in death by her parents Joseph and Anna Tipery and her sister, Joan Akin, all of New Orleans. Survivors include her sister-in-law and friend Phyllis Deter Lengyel with husband George, and nephew Ryan McCarthy who spent many childhood hours at baseball games and fishing in the east Texas woods with Susan and Russell; brother-in-law Dwight Deter with wife Chris and nieces Stephanie and Kim; as well as a loving circle of friends, especially Steven and Tricia Adcock and Wes and Pam Lee. The family is deeply grateful and honor Russell's devoted caregiving throughout these years, especially as they traveled this last road holding each other close.
