William T. McWeeney

William T. McWeeney (Bill) passed peacefully on February 10, 2021 at the age of 93. Bill was born in New York City to Irish immigrants William and Elizabeth (Faughnan) of County Leitrim, grew up in the Bronx during the Great Depression, graduated from Bronx High School of Science, and served in the Army during World War II. In 1952, he married Irene Theresa Cahill and with $200 in their pockets they moved across the country to San Diego, California. A job with the federal government took them and their two children at the time to Dallas, Texas. Bill continued to work for the government and private companies for many years, transferring to Houston, Texas with his wife and four children in 1966. He retired in 1988 and pursued his dream to study ancient Irish history by studying a year abroad at University College Cork, Ireland. He was a lifelong learner and took continuing education classes for a number of years.

Bill loved baseball (especially his beloved Yankees from the 30s and 40s, and the Astros for the last 50 years), single-malt scotch, Italian food, living in Houston, and especially telling tales from his childhood and Army days. He was proud of his Irish heritage and of surviving and thriving despite a meager childhood. Most of all he was proud of and loved his wife and family, grandchildren, sons- and daughters-in-law, and his numerous nieces and nephews. He was a great friend to all and will be sorely missed. He is survived by his wife Irene, daughter Jean (Jeff Hankins), daughter Lynn Johnson (Mike) and grandson Chris, son Brian (Carolyn) and granddaughter Caitlin, and son Neal (Adriane) and granddaughters Grace and Clare.

A private service with military honors will be held at Houston National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, consider donations to MD Anderson Cancer Center or a charity of your choice.
